The DeWitt History Museum
The DeWitt General Army Hospital complex was built in Auburn during World War II to care for wounded military personnel. The American Red Cross, there under the direction of Lorraine Anderson, played an important role in caring for patients and improving morale.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the center is now home to the Placer County Government and the DeWitt History Museum. The museum is filled with artifacts, images and interpretations of life in the hospital during the second World War. A recreation of a 1940’s kitchen shows a bit of what life outside of the hospital looked like during that era. The museum also delves into the post war period, when the complex was used as the DeWitt State Hospital from 1946 to 1972.
Open Wednesdays from 12pm to 4pm, closed every other day and holidays.
