Placer County Museum
Located on the first floor of Auburn’s iconic courthouse, the Placer County Museum tells the story of Placer County’s history starting from the original Nisenan Maidu inhabitants through to the latter half of the 20th century. The museum uses dioramas, photographs, and personal artifacts big and small to show how peoples lived and used the land in the area.
There are some fantastic relics from the Gold Rush era on display here, including the Placer County Gold collection, a replica of the Sheriff’s office and a full size passenger buggy. But there is quite a bit more here too. The Pate Collection of American indian artifacts is housed here, and many artifacts and stories from the county’s rich agricultural past and present.
Saturday walking tours of downtown Old Auburn have recently restarted. The walks start in the Placer County Museum gallery and last for about an hour.
