Lone Buffalo Vineyards

A little off the beaten path and a short drive down a rugged oak-lined dirt road, from the already off the beaten path of Wise Road, you’ll find the inviting bright red awning and umbrellas of Lone Buffalo Vineyards. Inside, the tasting room is suggestive of a wood paneled adventure club. Step up to the beautiful natural wood tasting bar and sample some traditional favorites and a few unusual surprises, all delicious.

You're likely to find owners Phill and Jill Maddux behind the counter pouring samples and talking guests through their seasonal wine selections. If not Phil or Jill, then daughter Jocyln or Assistant Winemaker Matt. Everybody seems to really enjoy pitching in at this award winning family vineyard, and their commitment to quality wines shines through.

Lone Buffalo offers white, sparkling and rose wines, but the bulk of their offerings are red wines. Where The Buffalo Roam (Rhone blend), Medicine Man Malbec, Noble Beast Cab and Tatonka Termpranillo are all popular, as is their Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. If you find a wine you really like, you may want to pick up several bottles as they sell out quickly.

In addition to the main line, Lone Buffalo has introduced its jbrand series. These are small lots of unique wines, often with an interesting twist, like the Dogface Syrah with a portion of proceeds going to support Dogface Butterfly habitats, or the Savvy B, a Sauvingon Blanc partially fermented in a red wine style.

Grapes are grown on their vineyards in South Auburn and North Auburn, and they work with growers throughout the region. The North Auburn property was split from the historic J.V. Ranch, a farm that dates back to the Gold Rush. All wines are bottled and produced all on site. Visit their website for information on tastings and upcoming events. The tasting room is open Friday through Sunday, 12-5pm, and some holidays.
